Distinguished and Famous people from Bellarine Peninsula
Two women who farmed together at Coriyule left a lasting mark on the Bellarine Peninsula. Their partnership joined practical agricultural experience with energetic local involvement, and both names survive in the wider district.
🌾 Anne Drysdale
Anne Drysdale had farmed in Scotland before arriving in Port Phillip in 1840. She formed a farming partnership with Caroline Newcomb, first near Geelong and then at Coriyule on the Bellarine Peninsula. They acquired the run in 1843 and later secured its freehold, moving into their stone homestead in 1849. Drysdale died there in 1853. The town bearing her name recalls a woman whose colonial life was centred on managing property and building a working enterprise with another woman.
🌾 Caroline Newcomb
Caroline Newcomb helped develop the Coriyule enterprise and continued running it after Anne Drysdale's death. An accomplished horsewoman, she supplied much of the partnership's energy and initiative. She was also the first secretary of the Methodist church founded at Drysdale in 1849, and later helped establish Geelong's Ladies' Benevolent Association. Her story combines the physical and business demands of farming with religious and charitable work. Coriyule was their home as well as their shared livelihood.
